Teresa Rose and Prayer Warriors,
Mom and I had a very difficult phone conversation, with Dad's doctor... The topic of conversation was about Dad's long-term care. The prognosis given,
by the doctor isn't a good one! The doctor is giving us 24-hours to make our decision, between 4 different options... And, they are, as follows:
1. In-Home Hospice. -- (The trouble, with this is mom and I would be responsible for his care when the nurse isn't here... This would entail cleaning feeding
tubes, because he cannot be off the bipap machine without his oxygen dropping significantly... And, he cannot eat or drink, with the bipap machine, because
the bipap machine would force the food or liquid into his lungs. Another alternative to the bipap machine is to put in a trach, but the doctor said, the
risk is very high, that he could code blue again during the surgery. And, dad did say, that he didn't want to be placed back on the ventalator and he's
tried taking off the bipap mask...)
2. In-Patient Hospice -- (The issues aforementioned would be the same, only with the exception that we wouldn't be responsible for his care in the meantime
while the nurse isn't here... However, the issue here is visiting dad, while he's in in-patient hospice, because there isn't any local hospices within
50 to 100 miles...)
3. Nursing Home. -- (We have local nursing homes, that could provide the care he would require, but however they aren't the best of quality care... Years
ago, before dad joined any of the sites he had a knee replacement and they placed him in a mandatory therapy/rehabilitation at our local nursing home...
He didn't like it one bit, and got so depressed and said to us, "What are yall going to do just leave me here?")
4. Take him off everything, and just see what happens... Let nature take its course, and let him go home to be with the Lord.
All 4 options are very difficult ones to swallow! Though this decision falls ultimately, to mom, and she truly wants us to be in on the decision... On
one hand, we are faced with the decision of placing him into long-term care where he may live up to 6 months (And, in the meantime may suffer more issues),
or take him off everything and let him go peacefully... Some of the family is torn... Some just are unwilling to let him go, and I can understand that...
Of course, we all would want him to come home, and be the same person he's always been! But, from what the doctor is saying, that's just not possible and
some of the family isn't willing to accept that! They cannot see, that his quality of life is going to be seriously altered... Dad's brain capacity isn't
really known to us, but the doctor did tell me and mom there was severe brain damage due to lack of oxygen getting to the brain for 6 minutes... He said
the CT Scan didn't initially indicate it, but the EEG showed an significant brain dysfunction... Why they didn't evaluate him for what his brain capacity
is -- is beyond me! He more than likely will need to be on dialysis, for his kidneys, because the lasix they are giving him for his Congestive Heart Failure
through IV is more ffective than the pill form to get the fluid off his heart... But, they are adversely affecting his kidneys, along with his diabetes.
If they were successful with the trach, without him coding... It would have to be cleaned, too. He wouldn't be able to walk or move around, and do the
things he once loved doing... But, it is always a difficult decision to let someone go, that you love! Especially, when its someone that played a part,
in giving you life!
So, we will be going to the hospital tomorrow morning, to make this decision around 9 AM CDT. So, please, keep all of us, in your prayers that we'll be
able to make the best decision for dad! Thanks, and God Bless!
