1 cup milk, warm
1/2 cup sugar, granulated and divided
1/4 ounce active dry yeast
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring a worksurface
oil, to taste
1 (21-ounce) cherry pie filling
For the cream cheese frosting:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt

Method:

Step 1 - In a small bowl, add the warm milk and 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar.
Step 2 - Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it set for 20 seconds.
Step 3 - Stir the yeast mixture until the yeast is dissolved.
Step 4 - Leave the yeast to bloom, it should become foamy and should start to smell of yeast, about 5-10 minutes. Do not use yeast that doesn't bloom.
Step 5 - Add the remaining granulated sugar, 1/3 cup of the butter, 1 teaspoon of the salt, the eggs, and the flour to the bowl of a stand mixer and mix until well combined.
Step 6 - Attach the dough hook to the stand mixer.
Step 7 - Pour the bloomed yeast mixture over the flour mixture and fully incorporate all the ingredients together.
Step 8 - Oil a bowl.
Step 9 - Transfer the dough to the prepared bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
Step 10 - Place the bowl in a warm area and allow the dough to rise until it has about doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Step 11 - Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
Step 12 - Lightly flour a worksurface.
Step 13 - Turn the dough out onto the prepared worksurface and roll it out until it forms a 16x12-inch rectangle.
Step 14 - Spread the cherry pie filling evenly over the dough, covering the entire surface.
Step 15 - Roll the dough down to the bottom of the other edge, starting with one of the long edges.
Step 16 - Cut the rolled dough loaf into 1 3/4-inch slices.
Step 17 - Add the rolls to the prepared baking pan.
Step 18 - Cover the rolls in the baking pan with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
Step 19 - Allow the rolls to rise until they double in size, about 30 minutes.
Step 20 - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 21 - Bake the rolls until lightly golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
Step 22 - In a large bowl, add the remaining butter, the powdered sugar, the cream cheese, the vanilla extract, and the remaining salt and beat together with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy.
Step 23 - Generously spread the cream cheese frosting over the rolls while they are still warm.
Step 24 - Serve.
