One day, an elderly woman was visiting a long-lost relative's house for tea. Her hostess's young son ran up to her as she entered the house and blurted out, "My, how ugly you are."

Horrified, the child's mother remonstrated, "Zack! What do you mean, calling Mrs. Winters ugly?"

"I only meant it as a joke," replied the little boy.

"Well," said the mother, clearly without thinking through her reply, "how much better would the joke have been if you had said to our guest, 'My, how pretty you are!'"
